Passengers can save a lot of money when booking holidays by using the so-called budget airlines. But you need to take a number of factors into account.

The last few years have seen the formation of a number of so-called budget airlines or low cost airlines. Some of the best known of these are Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe, and BMI baby.

Prospective passengers can save a great deal of money by using these airlines. But they need to be aware of certain things which can easily raise the cost, sometimes to as much as using a standard airline! Here are some factors that need to be considered before booking a flight.

When Should You Book if Using a Budget Airline?

In general, passengers should book as early as possible. These flights tend to start very cheaply, but then rise in price as time goes on. However, if seats are not selling, sometimes the price will go down.

It is very difficult to be certain, and it may be worth using the airline’s website, and watching prices for some days to try to get a feel for what is happening. But travelers should not wait too long before booking tickets!

What About Airline Taxes and Other Extras?

Most of these airlines charge for everything beyond the actual seat. Extras to be considered include airline taxes, hold baggage, credit card fees. Passengers should always find out the total cost before booking, as it will be very different from the initially advertised seat price. But there are various ways you can save money.

Saving Money on the Tickets

All these airlines charge extra for checked-in luggage. So can you manage with only carry-on baggage? It is probably possible if only traveling for a weekend or a few days – see Airline Flying with Only Hand Luggage, and Packing for Airline Travel for some hints. However, bear in mind that some articles cannot be carried in hand baggage.

It may well be cheaper to pay with a debit card than a credit card, so passengers should check this in advance.

It is usually not worth paying especially for priority booking, especially for a short flight. After all, there will be seats for everyone, and does it really make all that much difference where you sit?

Passengers may want to take their own food on board, since these airlines charge premium prices for meals and snacks. It is quite acceptable to do this.

Budget airlines sell their seats at a loss, and need to make money somehow. However, with a little care and forethought you can make sure that they make up the shortfall from other passengers, not you. So happy - and cheap - travelling!
